NEW MUSIC: BEN KIDSON – (WHEN I) RUNAWAY
Punk-pop artist Ben Kidson releases raw new single “(When I) Runaway”.
It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Ben Kidson, and it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve featured his brilliantly chaotic music on a music blog, whether it be Turtle Tempo or Scary Canary. This time, the Devon-based punk-pop (not to be confused with pop-punk) artist has hit us with a goliath of a single, “(When I) Runaway”, telling the relatable story of self-sabotage with a touch of tongue-in-cheek humour.
Upon listening, you won’t be surprised to discover that Ben has recently been named BBC Intro South West’s ‘Artist of the Week’ and been featured on plenty of Spotify editorial alt-pop playlists. Of course, playlist placement does not exclusively a great artist make, and Ben Kidson would be just as fabulous without Spotify’s support as he is with, but if it’s numbers you’re looking for, he’s got the streams to show for his success.
Mr Kidson comes complete as the perfect new object of your obsession, with intriguing backstory in tow – originally dragged into the world of bigmoney labels at a young age, then alienated by the (at times) self-righteous attitudes of those in the punk scene, Ben fled to a Devon AirB’n’B to reignite a passion for his true calling. His recent singles are the product of a year’s hard work defining a new sound, and have been used in the ever-popular BBC drama ‘Killing Eve’ amongst other impressive placements.
So, if you’re looking for pop with jagged edges and a few chilli flakes sprinkled on top, Ben Kidson’s your guy and “(When I) Runaway” is your song. In fact, it’s the anthem for self-sabotagers everywhere, serving as a little responsibly-distanced pat on the back as if to say “I know how you feel, kid. I’ve been there too.”
