Avant-Garde electro-pop artist Ana De Llor releases powerful new single “Penelope”.

If you think it’s hot today, it’s about to get hotter. Ana De Llor has just unveiled her latest single “Penelope”, a commentary on female sexual agency which, although not taking quite the same approach as Cardi and Megan have with “WAP”, sports a similar message. Ana De Llor is described as eccentric and rebellious by tastemakers, but I think her music goes deeper than that…

“Have you ever wanted to use your own body to furiously wash away the stain somebody left on you? I believe those thoughts and those actions are seen as unbecoming when they come from a woman but men have always been given the freedom to be as sexually liberated as they so desired.”

De Llor was born in Lisbon, and now resides in London, but she hasn’t strayed too far from her roots when it comes to music. The first few moments of “Penelope” feature her impressive soaring vocals drenched in extraordinarily spacious reverb, and lyrics sung in her mother tongue. It’s brooding and dark – unsettling, almost – and you won’t be ready for those thundering Portuguese frame drums when they come in, making the sound all the more dramatic. De Llor’s lyrics capture the unrest surrounding the subject of women’s sexuality, and she explores her own feelings through the eyes of a Grecian tragedy:

“As a woman, I feel we are not allowed to be as sexually liberated the same way Penelope wasn’t in The Odyssey. It was expected of her to turn down any suitors that came onto her while her husband was away on a [20-year-journey]. While away he made the decision to […] lay with Goddesses, nymphs and common girls alike. I wanted to imagine a world where Penelope […] put her needs and her desires first.”

Ana’s articulate songwriting style and prosodic use of breathy gasps and slithering synths to convey the ‘quelle horreur’ of female sexuality and the double-standards that exist within society, and open doors for discussion at every turn. Keep a close eye on this talented artist; she’s going places…
