A VERY 'SCARY' CHRISTMAS!

Updated: Dec 14, 2021

Prepare yourselves, for this is the Scary Canary Christmas Extravaganza! Featuring any and all Christmas songs from across the globe. I hope you're sitting comfortably...

Biskee Brisht - Christmas Morning

Biskee Brisht, the Isle of Man indie-folk eight-piece, have released their second Christmas single, 'Christmas Morning'; traditional folk instruments meet sleigh bells in this mournful festive single.

The band describe the song as being about 'disappointment, stagnation, depression, fear - all the things we’ve been feeling after these crazy two years'.

So, who's for some Eggnogg?

Caroline Gustavsson - Christmas Lights

Very much in line with the more modern Sia and Ariana Grande-style Chrimbo-pop, Caroline Gustavsson's 'Christmas Lights' will have you bopping around the tree this year.

It's sleigh bells galore - totally impossible to imagine yourself anywhere other than a bustling shopping centre whilst this single is playing in the background. We love it, Caroline!

Wes Walls - This Christmas, I'm Coming Home

Basically, Michael Bublé with an electric guitar!

Wes Walls' festive single 'This Christmas, I'm Coming Home' is a holly-jolly good listen, sure to get you in the mood for decorating the Christmas tree (and then re-decorating it again once your kids have gone to bed. What is it with eight-year-olds and putting all the posh baubles next to each other? Spread them out, spread them out!).

Talina Rae - Christmas Lights

Berlin-based Talina Rae's 'Christmas Lights' is peppy, upbeat, and perfect for a festive gathering with friends.

We all know that the Germans do Weihnachten best, so let's do as they do this year, and free-hand some shots of rum into your mug of mulled wine for a little extra spice. Cheers to Talina Rae! 🍻

Dale - Lucifer's Christmas

Just in case anyone out there is feeling a touch too holy, Dale has put his own spin on Christmas spirit with the surprisingly endearing single 'Lucifer's Christmas'.

It's high time we checked in on how Satan is doing, actually. He tends to get a little overlooked at this time of year. The Scottish accent suits him down to the ground, though... who knew?!

Rich Chambers - It's Christmas Time (All Over the World)

Indie-rock, but make it Christmas! Canadian songwriter and musician Rich Chambers fuses jangly guitars (think The Cure) and good ol' fashioned festive spirit in this single.

This is the sort of track that could sit nicely on a Christmas playlist next to The Darkness, and that your rambunctious younger cousins will insist on playing on repeat when they come to visit. (In fact, this is your reminder to move the glass ornaments to the top of the tree, just in case...)

Mick J. Clark - It's Getting Near Christmas

This is the true meaning of the genre that I like to call jingle-bell-rock. Actually, 'It's Getting Near Christmas' is just one of four festive tracks that Mick J Clark released back in 2010, so it would seem they've lasted the test of time!

I can imagine Santa putting this one on his driving playlist for Christmas Eve. I wonder if he ever passes the aux to Rudolph...

JamsideUp ft. Timeless Tim & MC Burglar - All She Wants For Christmas

I don't know what it is about Raggae and Christmas, but the two seem to blend together so well. 'All She Wants For Christmas' is the single from JamsideUp ft. Timeless Tim & MC Burglar which is raising money for CRISIS this year.

CRISIS is a UK-based charity that is fighting to end homelessness, so please consider donating whatever you can via the link below. To quote the artist, 'a little bit of kindness is all it takes'.

Marvin Muoneké - Santa, I Can Explain

Ho ho ho! There's something about Christmas-themed jazz which is the most festive thing ever - Marvin Muoneké's 'Santa, I Can Explain' is no exception to the rule.

The Weston-Super-Mare jazz vocalist, brass player and arranger teams up with Adam In The Hat for this witty single which is just as catchy and smooth as any Capitol-era Christmas song (and we all know that those are the best ones...).

Listen closely for detailed accounts of the duo's hijinks!

Sarah McGuinness - Christmas Everyday (No More Sad Songs)

Irish singer-songwriter has re-released her single 'Christmas Everyday (No More Sad Songs)' to give us all a little extra joy this year!

The upbeat love song is all about appreciating good company over good gifts, and it's the perfect addition to a festive playlist, whilst you deck the halls with boughs of holly ⭐️

Winterbrook - My Boyfriend Is A Snowman, Polar Bear For Christmas

What a haul from Winterbrook this year! This artist seems to specialise in Christmas songs of all shapes and sizes.

'My Boyfriend is a Snowman' is an easygoing indie track, all about how pleasant life can be whilst pursuing a metaphorical relationship with an inanimate object that literally couldn't leave you if it tried. It's not as dark as it sounds, I swear...

'Polar Bear for Christmas' features electric guitars for a slightly edgier sound, and tells the story of - well, what it would be like to get a Polar Bear down the chimney for Christmas. Some interesting takes on the traditional Christmas song by Winterbrook, and we're here for it!

Us4 - Christmas in Dublin

You might have guessed that Us4 is a four-piece, but you might not have guessed that they're actually based in Birmingham rather than Dublin.

Nonetheless, Irish heritage runs through the veins of this band, and 'Christmas in Dublin' blends festive spirit with Irish folk music and instruments. Oh, what fun!

Tina Loeffler - The Greatest Gift

Based in Black Forest, Germany, Tina Loeffler crafts her music in a cosy home studio next to the woods. That already makes me feel a bit festive, and we haven't even got to the song yet!

'The Greatest Gift' is an indie-folk track that highlights the feeling of familiarity and cosiness whilst spending time with loved ones over the Christmas period. A very sweet and sentimental Holiday track for your collection!

Ralph Curtis - You Feel Like Christmas

This holiday-themed country-pop single from Ralph Curtis is perfect for cuddling up to loved ones in front of an open fire.

'You Feel Like Christmas' is the romantic and laid-back track we sometimes crave after having listened to manic Chrimbo-pop for the last few hours, or when you need a moment's rest after developing a repetitive strain injury from wrapping too many presents.

Laura Tsaggaris - Get In the Mood

Get this - there's a whole *album* of Laura Tsaggaris' Christmas songs!

'Get in the Mood' is among the most catchy of her holiday collection, with slide-y country guitar riffs and sassy lyrics. Although at first listen, it's a 'party song', Laura actually describes the true meaning as 'having a hard time getting into the spirit of the season'.

Kinga Angelys - Can't Do Christmas Without You

The interminably glam Kinga Angelys has released Christmas tune 'Can't Do Christmas Without You', a fun and quirky festive heartbreak song.

This track is full of hope and positivity, with Kinga willing for someone to return to spend the Yuletide season alongside her, and do all the things they used to again.

Marty Zylstra - Sticks Like Snow

Canadian songwriter Marty Zylstra releases his single 'Sticks Like Snow' for Christmas, an indie-rock tune with bucketloads of drama (string sections included) and festive cheer.

The single follows the theme of grief, loss, and love over the Holiday period. If you're having a bit of a pensive Christmas this year, this'll be the perfect addition to your playlists!

Johan Glidden - Everything I Had

Folk-pop artist Johan Glidden releases his Holiday single 'Everything I Had', a warm and nostalgic look back at the Christmases of his childhood.

There is a particular kind of magic you feel as a child, whilst wandering around the neighbourhood decked out with flashing lights and inflatable snowmen, leaving port and mince pies for Santa at the foot of the fireplace. Johan captures that feeling nicely!

Cindy-Louise - A Different Little Christmas

Haunting vocals and orchestral instrumentation make Cindy-Louise's song reminiscent of every Emo's favourite festive movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Chock-full of drama (and minus Jack Skellington), 'A Different Little Christmas' is, indeed, a different take on your usual sleigh-bell-laden Holiday karaoke song. How fun!

Eric Alexandrakis - Here Comes the Snow!

'Here Comes the Snow!' by Eric Alexandrakis is exactly what would happen if Blink 182 went a bit Irish Folk-y, and we're liking it! It's an unlikely combination, but sometimes those are the ones that work the best.

Perfect for quite aggressively confessing your love for someone whilst soundtracked by a fiddler in the snow.

Darcey Hope - Coming Home

Last, but most certainly not least, we have Darcey Hope's laid-back festive tune 'Coming Home' - the brilliant thing about this is that it won't feel wrong to listen to once the big day has come and gone!

The gentle lull of Darcey's vocal against a backdrop of acoustic guitars and piano might have this song on loop all the way into next Summer, and beyond.
